Did you hear that The Office won Best Comedy at the Emmy’s last night? Did you also hear that Jesus literally wept when Steve Carell was not voted Best Actor in a Comedy? You know what is better than making Jesus cry? Starring in the best comedy of the summer/year. Oh wait, that was Steve Carell in “Little Miss Sunshine.”

If there were to be a movie that would make me appreciate homosexuality (not that there is anything wrong with it) more than I already do, it wouldn’t be “Brokeback Mountain.” No. It would be “Little Miss Sunshine.” “Brokeback Mountain” presented a ‘homosexuality is just like the love between a man and a woman’ (some of my more observant readers will notice man and woman, and man and man are not exactly the same - the ‘-wo’ is missing, and that isn’t the only thing…). But Steve Carell’s character (Frank) in “Little Miss Sunshine” was not an over the top homosexual, unlike some of his peers (Lance Bass, I am looking at you). I just think homosexuality is presented much better when you show the people aren’t different rather than saying the love shared isn’t different. “Brokeback Mountain” literally showed me that it is different…

Of course, this sarcastic tangent about a plot line that isn’t really prevalent to the movie is all to say that I loved “Little Miss Sunshine.” It presented a much different spin on the way families interact from your mainstream Hollywood comedy and it has a great soundtrack which I purchased on iTunes for $9.99.

If I have just tickled your cinema bone, “Little Miss Sunshine” is a must see.

Well, the Daytime Emmy Nominations are out. Being a college student who is home at all hours of the day, this award ceremony is very close to my heart, as I now realize there is so much more to Daytime television than just ‘I Love Lucy’ reruns and ‘Jerry Springer,’ as I once ignorantly thought. Now I can give you the scoop on all the latest soaps, as well as the low down on what isn’t going down with Oprah’s hair.

As I was perusing the list of nominations, I first noticed that there was a category for about every factor that goes into a television show: makeup, hair, hair in a drama series, lighting, lighting direction, lighting direction for a drama series, single camera editing, muilti-camera editing, main title design…etc. Then as I got passed the fact that a monkey can win an Emmy, I couldn’t help but notice the Dr. Phil Show was nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling. Now I know know if you are aware, but the host of the Dr. Phil Show, Dr Phil, has no hair. I guess the hairstylists of the Dr Phil Show, Annette Jones and Mimi Vodnoy-Love, are doing something special. Perhaps they are going the different route, look at all the beef Oprah has taken for here hair, even earlier in this post. If not even Oprah is above cheap shots at her hair, it may be better to go bald and win an Emmy Nomination.

Now I am aware all the guests have their hair done for the show, not just the host. But look at a show like The View, with five female hosts that need their hair done, or better yet, The Price is Right - Bob Barker has lots of beauties on stage with him. But ‘Cue-ball Phil?’ Pathetic. My Daytime television watching career over if Phil wins. And why did Extreme Akim not get nominated for “Outstanding Achievement in Wielding a Bat in a Court Room?”

Lately I have been noticing YouTube all over the internet offering a place to store and share your video’s online. So I thought I would check it out and make a profile and all. I think if I made more short films I would like it more, but conceptually, I like the idea of what YouTube is offering.

The drawback is that people upload copyrighted material, such as SNL skits, which technically is illegal, yet still happeneds despite YouTube’s “Do Not Upload Copyrighted Material,” warnings. It is clear that if they cared about peoples work being ripped, they would remove it, but then they wouldn’t be getting so popular and making money off all their ad space. I wish YouTube did not become so popular on Myspace, because now people just seem to use it to put funny videos and their profiles and mess everything up. I would like to see the YouTube concept applied as a place for amateur film makers to showcase their indie films, not see what studios are making and the copyright laws being broken. Someone needs to do it, and do it right.

So I did my part a threw up a short film I did for Easter Sunday a couple years ago.

As I have mentioned before, I signed up for Blockbuster online rentals. I think it is an awesome service. Unfortunately, the last two DVD’s sent have never shown. Fortunately, customer service seems great and they send another no questions asked. I am certain they have my correct address, I think there is a bigger problem.

I just sent an e-mail to Blockbuster customer service. When a DVD is sent, the packaging proudly comes in my mailbox as if it is some advertisement - the Blockbuster logo large on one side pointing people to their website, the reverse side is similarly branded in the same fashion. Wouldn’t that be a target for theft in the postal service? It is shaped closely to a DVD, it bears all the Blockbuster Online advertisements, I couldn’t imagine it being too hard to be “removed” from it’s expedition to my house. Not to offend any postal worker and cause them to go “postal,” but I don’t think postal workers are held to the highest moral obligation, although it is a federal offense to steal mail. I just can’t imagine it being that hard of a crime to commit for a few free DVD’s.

Now, I appreciate Blockbuster Online for being so willing to ship me another without questions, but I feel bad asking for my third copy of “March of the Penguins” having never received the previous two. In my kind letter to them, I suggested they would save lots of money in lost DVD’s and printing if they just shipped DVD’s in more discrete packaging. Then I will be a happy customer, not going for three weeks without a movie to watch. Just a thought.

Today was a hard day. I discovered I have cancer. It started just as any other lazy day would - I woke up at 9:30, ate cereal, and took a shower, but something just wasn’t right. So I went to go see “Dr. King Kong,” and confirmed I have a raging case of ape fever.

King Kong has to be the greatest thing to hit the big screen since Peter Jackson’s last film, Return of the King. In fact, Peter Jackson’s directing King Kong was a large part of why I went to go see it. From an interview I heard, the original King Kong made Pete want to become a director, and vowed to do a remake of it once he made millions on Lord of the Rings and lost hundreds of pounds that wasn’t beard weight for once.

This film has everything I want in a movie besides a back-rub: man-women love, ape-women love, dinosaur-ape fighting, ape biting man’s head off, Jack Black trying to be a good actor…etc. Apparently this movie owned, apparently I want to see it again, apparently I wish I would fall in love with an ape, and apparently you shouldn’t see this movie if you have a pace-maker, as you will be ape-pounding your chest excessively after you see this film.

I give this 9.8 shoes out of 10. If you need your cinema bone tickled this Christmas season, I highly suggest King Kong (unless of course you have a pace-maker or are deathly jealous of monkey love).

NOTE: I do not have cancer. Millions of people are affected by cancer each year and is no laughing matter. It was merely used to give this movie perspective by comparing it to a world epidemic - AIDS or Bird Flu can just as easily be used in it’s place. December might as well be cancer awareness month, so have yourself screened for cancer.

This educational message was brought to you by jonshoe.com and the letter K.

I love movies. I was dismayed at my DVD collection on Sunday afternoon when I wanted a good movie to fall asleep in front of, but couldn’t find anything that I would want to watch until I fell asleep. I put in Seinfeld, but there is no way I am going to sleep through that.

So last night I decided I was going to sign up for online rentals. The choice was between Netflix and Blockbuster. Both offer the same plans for the same price, so it was a toss up. I ended up signing up for Blockbuster’s simply because every month you get two free “in house” rentals, other than that Blockbuster and Netflix are identical in service and price. As of this morning, my first movie in my “queue” shipped to me: American History X (the best and worst movie I have ever seen at the same time). As soon as I mail American History X back, I have a list of DVD’s waiting to show up on my door step. I am excited to get my movie watching on, all for only $9.99 a month.

Does anyone have any good movies that deserve a rental (besides Over the Top, I have seen it and it owns)?
