Last night I got to see “Walk the Line” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon - the story of the late Johnny Cash. Now I am not a huge Cash fan, I mainly saw this film to hang out with friends and to see if there is validity behind all the Oscar buzz this movie is receiving, but have a much greater appreciation for the music after this film.
If you want to receive more admiration from me, I would suggest becoming a drug addict and alcoholic for years and then come clean - I can respect that. I think “Walk the Line” mainly gave me context for the music that Johnny Cash wrote over his long career so that I can now see where he is coming from. From a film aspect, I was impressed that Phoenix and Witherspoon rerecorded all of Cash’s songs, even thought the originals are better, I guess they saved money for purchasing the rights? When I am feeling crazy, I plan to purchase some of the original Cash albums on iTunes.
I would count on this film winning some Oscars, most likely for acting. I wasn’t completely sold on the editing and overall layout of the film. At times I felt I had already seen certain scenes and that the movie skipped back a few minutes. Definitely worth a watch if you need just one reason to appreciate this form of country. A thumb and an index finger up from me.
“At times I felt I had already seen certain scenes and that the movie skipped back a few minutes.” Those are called flashbacks Jon. Many filmakers use this device to revisit a past event in the film. But in all seriousness I really enjoyed the movie and learned a thing or two. For example, if you’re ever going to propose to a girl do it in front of a large crowd so she feels pressured to say yes.
When you buy the songs make sure to get:
Folsom Prison Blues, A Boy Named Sue, John Henry,
Ring of Fire, and Walk the Line
